Fall/ Holiday, 2008 Reveille! 21 Alumni News Aloha/ Hive 1920s- 50s Nancy Reeve Blank: " I look back with great pleasure on my years at Aloha Hive and Aloha." Sally Taylor Diuguid: " Not a day goes by that a tune or memory doesn't go through my head. Aloha will always be a part of me and I am grateful for the wonderful summers in Vermont!" Sally Chase Flynn: " Hive and Aloha have become very real to me again, as I have four granddaughters at the camps and they are just LOVING it!" Thayer Buurma Gershon: " I continue to teach at Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford. My daughter, Emily, is a Behavior Therapist and is currently working on her masters in Autism, and living in San Francisco." Kathy Childs Jones: " Daniel Jones has worked in Chicago for Obama for America since March, 2007. In June, 2008, he was promoted to Director of National Field Operations. Dan reports that for fun, he goes to work." Edith Tozzer Jordan: " At almost 92 years of age, I still relive my summers at Hive and Camp! You cannot imagine what an important part of my life they were!" Jean Miller Latimer: " I am almost 98, and believe I am one of the oldest living Guides in the Aloha Family. I love the camps, the fearless people who carry its spirit forward, and the appreciation it gave me of the outdoors and our natural world. Its memory energizes me internally. Aloha!" Nancy Main Linsley: " I am excited by the birth of my grand niece, Lucy Marjorie Proulx, daughter of my nephew, Andrew Lane, and his wife, Becky Proulx. I began my 18th year as the Administrative Assistant and Finance Officer at Annandale Terrace Elementary School in Virginia." Susan Buckingham McGarvey gathered with three generations of campers and counselors before a Red Sox game this summer. McGarvey wrote, " The Red Sox game last Saturday night brought some of my family for a visit and overnight stay. I want to share this photo with you. Daniel Mulno is constantly singing or whistling camp songs. He had a wonderful camp experience and is ready to return next summer. Thank you Barnes for making Lanakila such a special place. My heart is full." The photo shows three generations of campers and/ or counselors: Top Row left to right — David Buckingham, Dan-iel Mulno and Tim Buckingham. Lower Row left to right — Susan Buckingham McGarvey, Debbie McGarvey Mulno and Susan Buckingham. Bobbie Ela Randall sends a favorite poem written to her by her Secret Santa and wonders if anyone will take credit for writing it. Two of the many stanzas include, " When reveille wakes me every morn At 7: 05 or so I wish that bugle was somewhere else Like six feet down below. When warning comes at 12 of 12 My stomach is one big rumble, I gleefully think of the dinner ahead And up the steps I stumble." Anne Stafford: " Aloha continues to hold a very special place in my heart. I met my dearest friend there in 1935, and Virginia Luce Marcuse and I were best friends until her passing in 1997. I'll never cease to be grateful for all that Aloha represents." Posie Taylor had a chance meeting on her birthday with old tent mate, Harriet Fulton Dwyer, aboard the SS Kearsarge on Lake Sunapee, NH! Edie Geiger Van Syckle lives in Southbury, Ct and writes with fondness about many happy memories at Hive and Aloha and includes fun correspondence from the early 1940s between her mother and the camp clothing outfitters. Flannel shorts for Edie and her sister Lucy Ann cost $ 4.50 a pair. Edie particularly remembers the sanctuary that Fairlee was to young girls during World War II, writing, " Aloha was away from all of that, a gentle, happy, feel good environment. The smells of the pines, camp fires and of course, s'mores. What more could a girl want?" Aloha/ Hive 1960s- 2000s Perry Allison performed in Hanover recently with her a cappella group ' Custom Blend.' The performance was See Alumni News on page 22

22 Reveille! Fall/ Holiday, 2008 at The Canoe Club, where, in addition to fine dining, live music is offered seven nights a week. The Canoe Club is owned by Lanakila alumnus John Chapin. Jefan Weaver Baldwin: " I had a wonderful visit with Tina Meisell Towsley thanks to her note in the camp news. Sailing is my staple sport since we now live on Tampa Bay." Emily Brewster is living in Norwalk, CT and teaching science at Fairfield Country Day School. She reports that dad, Jeff Brewster is now retired from teaching art at Farmington High School in CT for 35 years! Meg Brewster Sodano and her husband, Joel, have moved to the Albany, NY area. Meg will continue with her artwork and pet portraits business. Peter Brewster graduated from the University of Vermont in the spring. Liza Cohen: is in Kisii, Kenya, working for an NGO called ICROSS ( International Community for the Relief of Starvation and Suffering), an organization that does HIV/ AIDS and TB work. They work to train " Community Health Workers" on the principles of something called Home Based Care; going to the homes of patients, administering medication, and teaching their families and communities about the realities of their diseases. Right now, Liza is mostly helping in the office with logistics and report writing, but will be going into training, and hopefully into the field ( perhaps on a motorbike - " pikipiki") soon after that. Whitney Geldermann is living in downtown Chicago. She is doing a reverse commute each day out of the city to the northern suburbs. Bailey moved back to Chicago last September to go to school at Northwestern. Mallory is a senior at Ohio University College of Communication in Athens, OH. She lived at UCLA for the summer while interning at BET ( Black Entertainment Television). Christy Hull Hegarty: " My years at Hive and Aloha were amazing, and I'll never forget them. We are hoping to spend a summer at Ohana Camp in the near future. I would love to catch up with other girls from my camping years, and enjoyed seeing " little" Catherine Herrick in her wedding photos in Reveille. Wow! I hope my Caitlin will be at camp soon." Jamie Phares- Jacobson: " I'm living in Princeton, NJ and have two beautiful children, recent Hiver Hadley, and Austin. He hopes to attend Lanakila next summer." Katharine Denny Joyce: " I was thrilled to have my two sons, Miller and Duncan Joyce, at Lanakila this past summer. With so many wonderful memories at Aloha and Hive, I love seeing them enjoying Lanakila so much!" Elizabeth Kendall, author of previous books on American dance and Hollywood romantic comedy, published Autobiography of a Wardrobe this spring. Instead of allowing the wearer to share how sophisticated she felt in her first pair of Italian shoes, it's the shoes that speak. The narrator in this tale is the wardrobe itself. Pat Latimer's book, Ohio Wine Country Excursions is considered a " must read" for fans of emerging wine regions. Mary Purves Liechty writes, " Liza Cohen ( see earlier entry, this page), an Aloha friend of my daughter, Addie Liechty, and I recently met in Kenya. I am working for Indiana Univeristy in Eldoret, Kenya." Jennie Maholic writes, " After 2 months of writing group emails while studying in Chile, I created a blog where I can put up anything new that happened and pictures. The site is www. jennieinchillan. blogspot. com. Cyndy Stetson McGeoch took this summer off from Camp to spend time with daughter, Lauren, who is heading to Kenya to do her PhD research. She will be there for up to two years before heading back to UC Davis to complete her dissertation. Cyndy and Bruce hope to visit her there next summer. Merrill Williams Noble: " After a year of trying to be in Oxford, OH at the same time, Peggy Collins Rassieur and I finally met outside a Wal- Mart for a quick hug and catch up! Our daughters both attend Miami University. Kate is rooming with Lauren Wiant from Camp. The Aloha connection is such an important constant in our life!" Martha Platt: " The one summer I spent at Aloha was an important one for me! I have many, many fond memories. I am a 6th grade teacher at a progressive school outside Philadelphia, and have been the director of the school's summer camp ( 250 kids for eight weeks), for ten years." Vicki Free Presser reports that son, Abe Singer, has moved to Chicago, where he is in a PhD program in Political Science, and son, Sam Singer, got married in June! Molly Rosen, Jennifer Lear and Erin St. John Kelly: Real women in Alumni News
