Fall/ Holiday, 2008 Reveille! 15 H orizons' campers, coun-selors, alumni, staff and friends attended a festive 10th anniversary celebration at the Middlebrook Campus in late June. The event began with Horizons' activities for young and old, and a traditional Aloha cookout dinner. Following din-ner, Danny Kerr dedicated Louise's Garden, a lovely rock garden adjacent to the Main House that honors Hori-zons' first director, Louise Richard-son, who was also a devoted Lanakila counselor and staff member for over 50 years. Posie Taylor said, " Louise's dedication to the Alohas in general and to Horizons in particular was legend-ary, and whenever I venture to the Middlebrook campus, I can practically see her holding forth on the front porch or on the telephone in the tiny office off the dining room. In all camp things, she was my friend and mentor." Horizons' guests were next treated to Upper Valley magic legend, Marko the Magician, as he performed an inti-mate show from the Horizons' stage. The youngest guests were invited on stage to assist Marko. The evening was capped off with an enormous 10th anniversary cake decorated with a colorful photo of Horizons' main house depicted in icing. The evening wound down and many of the evening's guests would be back a few days later, as campers and counselors in Horizons' 11th season. Top to bottom: Horizons' staff Tracey McFadden, Anna Alden and Director Danny Kerr; Foundation Director Jim Zien visits with emeritus trustees Peter Christie and Skip Brown; Danforth Family; Marko the Magician amazes the crowd. 16 Reveille! Fall/ Holiday, 2008 Hulbert News Andy Williams, Director Hulbert is 33 years old this year! I was reminded about how it has grown during a conversation with a Lanakila Alumnus who was at Family Camp this summer with his three year old son. He was not born when Hulbert was formed in 1978. I remember that we sometimes forget all the programs we run and how much of a broad impact they have on a wide range of folks. During the 2008 summer Family Camp, Hulbert was concurrently running a program for children with rheumatoid arthritis on the Lanakila campus, as well as a program for economically disadvantaged children from Vermont on the Hive campus. The Family Camp participant was pleased that we were providing opportunities to so many individuals, and also somewhat surprised to learn that we were doing more than running the resident summer camps. Given that nudge, I then briefly described the depth and breadth of the additional programs and populations the Foundation currently serves through Hulbert's year- round programs. It also seems appropriate to share a bit of this with you, as it never hurts to let new members of our family know the extent of our programming. Throughout the fall, winter, and spring, Hulbert's School Programs offers public and private schools the opportu-nity to participate in one to five day programs focusing on teambuilding, outdoor skill development, and environmental science. In the spring, summer and fall, Hulbert hosts traditional and service Elderhostels at Hulbert, at the Enfield Shaker Museum, the Dowd's Country Inn in nearby Lyme, NH, and at Ohana Camp. In order to improve employee performance, local businesses like Simon Pearce and King Arthur Flour have come to Hulbert, for one to three days of teambuilding, communica-tion enhancement, and goal setting as part of our Teamworks program. Focus groups from Dartmouth College, Scrapbookers, Quilters, New England folk arts dance group, the Sierra Club, and the Appalachian Trail Conference, come to Hulbert for weekends throughout the year to take advantage of our Facil-ity Rentals. From an Elderhostel intergenerational canoe trip, privately guided canoe trips with small groups of friends, cultural is-sues trip with a Cree family in Québec, Canada, to a weeklong backcountry ski trip in western Maine, Hulbert offers a range of Wilderness trips. For more than 20 years, Hulbert has offered a wide vari-ety of outdoor Leadership Training. Certified courses in wilderness medicine, wilderness first aid, wilderness first responder, EMT wilderness modules and education work-shops led by SOLO of Conway New Hampshire, highlight our offerings. Along with our traditional August summer Family Camp at Aloha, for more than 30 years Hulbert has run a New Year's Family Camp from December 27 through New Year's Day. Highlighted by Winterfest, a daylong community event offering a wide variety of winter activities, including snow-shoeing, cross- country skiing, lake skating, dog sledding, traditional winter camping and ice cutting, Hulbert offers Special Events open to the community throughout the year. Look to our website for upcoming calendar events and we hope you'll join us for a Hulbert experience in 2009. |
